Role
This is a locum position for a General Practitioner (Family Medicine physician).
If you have good communication skills, can relate well to people and will adapt well to a rural environment, then this is the right position for you.
Practice
The practice provides services to a low socio-economic, largely Maori population via a number of health centres located in each local rural community. The practice population of around 5,600 covers a large geographical boundary, which includes coastal, inland and mountainous towns.
Location
Te Puia Springs, on the East Coast of the North Island, is 103 kilometres north of the city of Gisborne and 70 kilometres south of the town of Te Araroa. It is the first place in the world to greet the new day. The district has a population of around 5,600. Te Puia Springs is one of the best places in New Zealand to discover Maori heritage. A series of heritage trails throughout the Tairawhiti District connect places of historical interest.
The warm summers and mild winters, combined with rich alluvial river flats provide ideal growing conditions for a range of crops and there are several stunning country gardens. The area is ideal for grape growing and produces desirable Chardonnay. Property prices are very reasonable compared with many other parts of the country.
Te Puia boasts a small, pretty lake and is the only active thermal area on the East Coast. It was a popular resort spa in the first half of last century, and the local hot pools, located alongside the only hotel in the Eastland region north of Gisborne, remain a pleasant place to unwind at the end of the day. The water reportedly has the highest mineral content in the world. The local 18-hole golf course is another popular place to unwind.
Basic shopping and services are available, a small local hospital, range of churches and primary and secondary schooling. Services such as a public library can be accessed at Tokomaru Bay, and there is comprehensive shopping, educational facilities and services available from Gisborne, including polytechnic tertiary education. Gisborne offers an airport, numerous cafes and restaurants, and several highly-rated beaches. It also has a well-established and successful wine industry.
