Lawrence is nestled in the hills of Clutha Country. It was Otago’s first gold-rush town and at the height of the gold fever, its population was 11,500; double that of Dunedin, making it one of the largest communities in the country. Its unique history is still alive today and there are many heritage, culture and arts events to visit in the area.
There are several walking and cycling tracks in the area including the Clutha Gold Trail, which starts in Lawrence and stretches 73 km to Lake Roxburgh. The trail follows the mighty Clutha River, passing through many points of interest and historic sites.
The community has a wide variety of sports and cultural clubs, an area school and play centre. There is a golf course, tennis courts, aquatic centre and all amenities including supermarket, petrol pumps, hotels, motels and cafes.
