It is located 40 kilometres southwest of Christchurch, between the shore of Lake Ellesmere and the mouth of the Rakaia River. The town supports the local farming industry, but has all the necessities of many bigger townships such as a supermarket, schools, churches, hospital (for elderly care only) and a small swimming pool.

Leeston is close to some of New Zealand’s best tourist destinations including Christchurch city, Hanmer Springs and Akaroa and is half a days drive from Queenstown and Wanaka. Fantastic skiing, mountain climbing, hiking and fishing opportunities are close by.
