Mataura sits beside the Mataura Falls which is 12km south of Gore (Southland’s second largest town). Founded in 1859, the town was shaped by industry – a paper mill (1876), a dairy factory (1887) and freezing works (1893). It is centrally located in the lower South Island, close to tourist attractions and outdoor pursuits.
It has easy access to Queenstown, Fiordland and Central Otago. The weather is mild, warm in the summer and cooler in the winter with affordable, modern housing available.
Just 10 minutes away, the neighbouring town of Gore straddles the Mataura River with many popular spots suitable for fly fishing for brown trout. Gore is well-presented with beautiful private and public gardens. Surrounded by productive farmland and forestry, agriculture (including farming and horticulture) forms the basis of the economy.
Gore is renowned for its passionate community spirit, and internationally known for trout fishing and annual country music festival, Gore also provides excellent amenities including shopping, cafes, library, museum and an art gallery housing the Mooney collection. It has a new multi sports complex with fitness, swimming, hydrotherapy and ice skating facilities, with a golf course in the area. Also in the district is a recently completed grade 1-2 mountain bike track and Dolamore Park, a bush reserve with interesting bush walks.
Education is well-catered for, with a small primary school in Mataura and in nearby Gore, four primary schools, one intermediate and two secondary schools. There is also a branch of the Southland Institute of Technology, offering a wide range of courses.
