Location

Rakaia is a small, friendly rural township dominated by the snow-fed Rakaia River, which is world-famous for salmon-fishing. Just 50 kilometres from the main South Island city of Christchurch, and 26 kilometres from Ashburton, Rakaia’s resident population is just 800, but its sporting and social amenities make it an attractive location for visitors. As well as salmon and trout fishing (along 50 kilometres of accessible braided river), recreational rafting, kayaking, jet boating, horse trekking, rock-climbing, skiing, hiking, tramping, mountaineering, windsurfing (at nearby Lake Coleridge), golf and bird watching can be enjoyed. Popular Mt Hutt Ski field is only 30 kilometres away along a scenic drive, which takes in the picturesque and historic Barrhill Village.
