The district extends from the coast to inland mountain ranges and offers an extensive range of outdoor activities, including mountain walks, skiing, thermal bathing, river sports, surfing, fishing and whale watching. The nearby Waipara Valley is one of New Zealand’s newest and most rapidly expanding wine areas with Pinot Noirs and Rieslings as its specialities.
There is a Primary School in Waikari (Years 1-8), an Area School (Years 1-13) in Hawarden, and a Pre-school in Hawarden. There are also grocery and hardware stores, a community library, a couple of pubs, and two cafes in Waikari. The practice is about 50 minutes from Christchurch city.
